Some offerings are haunting, poetically realized and taut. Others are hard to follow and/or end abruptly. Yet, the art (which seems to be this comic’s primary focus) is always inventive and topnotch.

In issue number one, Todd Harris’ (www.brocasso.com) art for “Big Ships” is simple and elegant with just enough artistic unreality to create a unique and extremely enjoyable experience. His subtle shading and sharp penciling truly remind one why comics are such a rich art form.

The second issue contains a truly haunting story in Mark Allyn Stewart’s “To Rule in Hell”. Using influences like HG Wells, George Romero zombie flicks and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein antics, Stewart indulges us with a vibrant, thoughtful tale. Chris Sagovac’s art is dark and commanding as well, making “To Rule in Hell” a true pleasure. Danny Poulos’ front cover also is a compelling piece of work, combining images from the various tales featured inside the issue.

Issue 3 contains a quick, intellectually stimulating tale in “The Axe”. Writer R. J. Gamayo uses “The Axe” to explore the emotional effects of violence and war, ultimately exploring how savagery can become commonplace. The slashing, thoughtful story also features some pretty mythically ferocious artwork by Aposcar Cruz as well.

With the Caffeine Dreams series, DWAP Productions proves their devotion to independent talent and originality is a boon not only to the comics’ industry but to all science fiction and horror lovers as well. Check all their eclectic offerings out at www.dwapproductions.com

(Note: DWAP Productions is proudly involved with the comic book-entertainment collective The Antidote Trust – www.theantidotetrust.com)

Horror Society

Edgar Allan Poe's Ligeia

<img style="display:block; We meet weekly at the Luminary Center For The Arts in St. Louis on Wednesday nights around 8 p.m. (we will be switching to Thursdays in Jan. 09). If you can't make it out to meetings, we have a google group I can sign you up at to exchange ideas, show art and get feedback. The SLCC is free to join and a great environment to come out and work alongside like minded individuals. Or maybe it’s actually Conan; it’s hard to tell.

Some of the design elements, in particular the use of negative space, are fantastic. A couple of the images are exceptional, and are the best thing in the book. I suspect it’s these gems that got the artist’s work included. It’s certainly not because of his grand violent vision, which is sloppy nihilism. Put succinctly, it’s the only time in the Caffeine Dreams comic I pick up the “ten years down the road I’m going to commit suicide with a nail gun” vibe common to low-rent indie artists....

The Geeks Of Doom

Gallery Showing / "HOMEgrown"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AVx0ehsTNHY/R_ph2pmhFmI/AAAAAAAAAB0/KgsSw6Sf90k/s320/HOMEgrown+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186565512378783330" />
Here is a pic from the HOMEgrown con(temporary) archive opening this past Friday. There was a great turnout and although it took a little coaxing, the patrons interacted with the room. It is hard to get people past the idea that they can't touch anything in a gallery, but once they saw others looking through books, sitting on the chairs and picking up the mail art to read; the vibe changed in an exciting way. "You mean it is ok to pick this up?" Of course it is. I will post more pics in the events section of my website in the next couple of weeks. Dana, Kim and Sarah put a long rail for the mail art that I contributed to the archive (shown above). I am extremely happy with the way the intallation looks.

This show is up until April 13th.

Gallery Opening / "HOMEgrown"

There is now a date set for the opening...

HOMEgrown: a con(temporary)archive

SPECIAL RECEPTION: FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2008, 5PM-7PM
3750 WASHINGTON BOULEVARD ST. Other Imaginary Tales".

Jim: As with all anthologies the strength and weakness lies in the fact that you have stories that may or may not appeal to you. The hit or miss ratio is all important.
Lee: I couldn’t agree more that anthology titles are a really tricky thing. One on hand they are a great way to experiment with style and content in a short format. On the other it is really hard to make three good stories all at once. Caffeine Dreams is a new comic that is a typical hit and miss anthology title. When I liked it, I really liked it but when I didn’t… oooohhh did I not like it.

Issue #1
Story 1: Big Ships – Story Dale Wilson, Art Todd Harris
Story 2: On Becoming a Monster – Story Dale Wilson, Art Chris Sagovac
Story 3: Monarch Kingdom – Story Dale Wilson, Art Nick Kunin

Jim: The book is called Caffeine Dreams, but I guess LSD Trips would not sell as well.
Lee: I don’t know. A title chance couldn’t hurt any. Overall, these are a collection of what I call “thinking man’s horror” stories. There isn’t a monster, per se, or really spooky stuff in general. The “horror” of the situation is far more subtle.

Jim: The first story Big Ships is excellent. The art work is a realistic style that was most likely shot directly from the pencils. The story itself was a cool little tale about one person passing his “madness” onto a young couple.
Lee: The art was definitely shot from pencils, and while it looks nice, I think the story would have been better served with some inks. The art was the best of the issue with some pretty good layouts and figure work but unfinished nature of it distracted me. The story was fine but my expectations for overt gore interfered with my initial read. Once I realized the book wasn’t going to have a big monster at the end, this story became better.

Jim: On Becoming a Monster the art is almost impressionistic. I found the story to be hard to follow because of that and the book was not well laid out. I have read impressionistic styles before and can still follow the layouts; this was missing strength in story telling on a couple levels. The story itself felt weaker also. It felt like the prologue to a story as opposed to a story.
Lee: I was looking for the right word and “impressionistic” is just about ideal. The art is composed of heavy blacks contrasted with stark whites. It’s visually stunning and very effective in places. Unfortunately, it breaks down into a bunch of mud and smears in other places. I like what was attempted but the layouts have got to be perfect to make it all work. They weren’t and it was very hard to understand what is going on in places. The dialogue really carries the story and it was effective but it felt like setup instead of short story.

Jim: Monarch Kingdom was my favorite and again we have a radical shift in art styles as this had a cartoon like look. The actual story was amusing as we see the main character almost become absorbed into a video game. You are not sure if his world is changing or his view of it.
Lee: The art was definitely the animated style and it worked well. There were some spots where it seemed flat but for the most part it worked well. This was the most straightforward of all three stories.

Issue #2
Story 1: To Rule in Hell – Story Mark Allen Stewart, Art Chris Sagovac
Story 2: The Tradition – Story/Art – Todd Harris, Dialogue Geoffrey Thorne
Story 3: The Assassination – Story Dale Wilson, Art – Mulele Jarvis

Jim: To Rule in Hell was more of a prose story with illustration and truth be know I only skimmed read it as I found the font size and color too difficult for a close reading. What I got from the story was a nice idea and the artwork conveyed the idea well enough.
Lee: This is an interesting book because it has the same creators from issue one but they are trying new things. In this case, the story is more typical horror, if slightly generic in content. The story is well executed and I enjoyed it. The art was a real surprise because . Sagovac is the same artist from “On Becoming a Monster” from Issue #1. And he uses a completely different style. Where as “Monster” was impressionistic, this is straightforward comic book panel art. The layouts were good but Sagovac’s anatomy needs works. There were points when the figures seemed either flat or out of proportion.

Jim: The Tradition was a series of pin-ups with a short little story to tie it together. Neither good or bad it really was just there.
Lee: I agree. This was a series of splashes with text boxes to fill in the story. I was more interested to see Todd Harris on art chores again. He did the first un-inked story in Issue #1. In that story I felt inks would have helped. In this story, the figure work is good but the inks seemed heavy handed and didn’t help very much. It appears that Harris has a good handle on how to use a pencil but is still learning to use a brush.

Jim: The Assassination was my favorite story and the artwork was very clean. It is a tale of two assassins who end up being assassinated. A very short buddy movie.
Lee: This was far and away the best story of the series. The subtle way in which the bad guys are themselves targeted for termination was very good. I really enjoyed it and the art was playful and light in contrast to the dark material it presented.

Jim: Overall I would give Issue #1 a “B” and #2 a “C”. I enjoy seeing different styles of art and some of the stories were okay, but I believe writing a good eight page story is one of the most difficult jobs in comics today. The stories need to be tighter and have more of a story to it. Look at what Ellis packs into 16 pages of Fell, it can be done.
Lee: Overall, I would give both issues “C +”. I am always attracted to anthologies because of the different art styles and these issues certainly try, with varying degrees of success, different styles. I felt issue #2 was hurt because I expected a continuation of “On Becoming A Monster.” But, “The Assassination” was the best story of both issues, which balanced things out. I really enjoyed seeing the artists try different things and they all have great potential. It will be interesting the see their development in future issues. Overall, these were a nice couple of books and you won’t be hurt by trying them.

Comics And...

"My First Taste" progress

"My First Taste" is going to be the title of the full length comic that I am doing art for currently. It is scheduled to be released at San Diego Comic Con 2008. It stems from the "On Becoming A Monster" tale in Caffeine Dreams #1 concerning the early years of Juan's journey and the beginning of his fall from humanity. The script is finished and I'm on page three of my pencils. I've been trying to work on a frame a night to accomplish this task and will try and blog more over the process. This is my first experience with color (in comics) so I'm sure there will be some epiphanies over the journey that I will share. So far, I have drawn some battle scenes with werewolves, vampires and undead creatures tearing at one another along with some frames with one of the main characters, Dorian.

L.A. Another film came my way this month with the working title "Blaze" written by Vernon Whitlock. I'm on the project as of this week as a concept artist and the plan is to make a comic book out of the script as well. When production gets rolling I may be working as a storyboard artist depending on my work load. I can't disclose much about it yet, but I know there will be a website to accompany the production.

"The Attendant"

I am working as a storyboard artist on a horror short called "The Attendant" directed by Steve Meyer. Weekend plans are to obsessively tweak drawings in photoshop (where needed) and to sketch the inner-cover. Time to break out the wacom, flatten them layers and do some touch-up. Also need to start thinking about the advertising page. Maybe something "old school" from early marvel advertisements. Remember how The Hulk and Spiderman would stop villains from robbing all the Hostess fruit pies? I love old comics. An old Daredevil comic I recently read had an advertisement for the Pete Rose batting system and another advertisement featuring O.J. Simpson.

On another note, I just finished reading "The Long Halloween". Such a great Batman story. I have been on a Loeb / Sale kick recently. "Superman Confidential" lead me to "A Superman for all Seasons". Sale draws some of the best Catwoman and Superman I have seen thus far and I'm really anticipating the "When in Rome" trade paperback. I recently ordered a long run of Dixon / Romita Jr. "Punisher War Zone" which will be intermingled with current books and JSA graphic novels to catch up with why the recent JSA book is so entertaining. Johns is really putting out some quality stories.

It is strange. I had a "happy accident". I ran out of paper last week for my printer. I only had parchment paper that I bought for some project that didn't go through a few years back, so I decided to use that. Now comes many hours of staring at a glowing screen well into the late hours of the evening. I did a lot of touching up as well as background work, once the sequences were in Photoshop. I also sent off images to inspire the portion of the outer cover that is to represent "To Rule in Hell" this morning. My publisher is meeting with the cover artist this evening to discuss an illustration that could represent all three stories while still maintaining the identity of "Caffeine Dreams" #2. The last planned illustration work for me is the cover of the story within the book, barring any frames that I want to illustrate in a different manner because of layout flow. The rough idea for the "To Rule in Hell" cover is just about worked out and will give the viewer a larger idea of one of the main elements of the story.

"To Rule in Hell" progress

I have just finished inking the last panel of "To Rule in Hell", written by Mark Allyn Stewart. This story is one of three 8 page stories to be found in Caffeine Dreams #2 published by DWAP Productions. Now I am on to the layout, assembling all the frames into one giant nebulous 8 page machine. My task will be to make something that will be aesthetically interesting, but easy to imbibe in spite of its nontraditional nature.

Curriculum Vitae

Education

M.A. 2005 Studio Art - New Media
Webster University - Saint Louis, Missouri

B.A. 1997 Media Communications - Animation, Film and Video
Webster University - Saint Louis, Missouri

Group Exhibitions and Screenings

2005
ASSEMBLE, Collaborative Works
Cecil R.
